NJ TIP Inc. has received funding provided by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) under the New Freedom Program to start a travel training program in Passaic County. The program is designed to help county residents with disabilities learn to use public transportation to commute to jobs and job training programs. This program addresses transportation challenges identified in the Passaic County Human Service Coordination Plan.
The Passaic County program will offer two components:
1. Small Group Travel Training:
• Available to persons with disabilities who face transportation challenges in reaching vocational rehabilitation programs and employers.
• Will be held at a variety of locations in Passaic County.
• During the 20-month project, approximately 80 individuals will participate in travel training and increase their ability to travel to jobs within Passaic County, into neighboring counties, and even into New York City.
2. Train-the-Trainer Travel Training Seminars:
• NJ TIP will collaborate with social service agencies, vocational rehabilitation programs and high school transition programs that serve persons with disabilities in Passaic County.
• Seminars will provide an overview of public transit options that are available to persons with disabilities and teach basic travel training skills.
• Agency and school personnel will be able to use this new transit and travel training knowledge to assist persons with disabilities understand and use public transit to commute to work.
NJ TIP Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission of teaching individuals with disabilities to ride public transportation as a means to commute to jobs, to travel to school, and to participate in community activities. Since 2005, NJ TIP has worked with a variety of government agencies, community organizations and schools to teach travel skills to approximately 750 individuals.
